What is a Fuel?
Fuel is any material that stores potential energy in a form that can be practicably released and used as heat energy.

Chemical fuels are divided in two ways. First, by their physical properties, as a solid, liquid or gas. Secondly, on the basis of their occurrence: primary (natural fuel) and secondary (artificial fuel).

Fuel oil is made of long hydrocarbon chains, particularly alkanes, cycloalkanes and aromatics.
Table of alkanes
Alkane Formula Boiling point [°C] Melting point [°C] Density [g·cm-3] (at 20 °C)
Methane CH4 -162 -182 gas
Ethane C2H6 -89 -183 gas
Propane C3H8 -42 -188 gas
Butane C4H10 0 -138 gas
Pentane C5H12 36 -130 0.626 (liquid)
Hexane C6H14 69 -95 0.659 (liquid)
Heptane C7H16 98 -91 0.684 (liquid)
Octane C8H18 126 -57 0.703 (liquid)
Nonane C9H20 151 -54 0.718 (liquid)
Decane C10H22 174 -30 0.730 (liquid)
Undecane C11H24 196 -26 0.740 (liquid)

Typical industrial fractional distillation columns
Laboratory setup
Fractional distillation

An Erlenmeyer flask is used as a receiving flask. Here the distillation head and fractionating column are combined in one piece.

Oil Refineries
How long does it take to build an oil refinery?
The time span involves the following;
-Feasibility study (Usually takes 6 months*)
-Configuration selection, Technology selection, Basic engineering package preparation (Usually 6 months*)
-Critical equipment engineering, Issue of design documents for Long-lead equipment’s, materials which takes time to design, construct, procure, and arrive at construction site (Usually before 1.5 to 2 years of Oil ______)
-Detail engineering, procurement, Construction Management, Oil IN ( Usually 2 years*).
There is a refinery which skipped the initial phases of development, but only to repeat it’s existing refinery design for its next refinery construction, which brings the time down.
Every stage in the whole development is very critical , though the effects of incorrect things are high to low in the order listed.

Jet fuel
What kind of fuel do jets use?
Jet fuel is a clear to straw-colored fuel, based on either an unleaded kerosene (Jet A-1), or a naphtha-kerosene blend (Jet B). It is similar to diesel fuel, and can be used in either compression ignition engines or turbine engines.
Here are further guidelines.
