English conversation lessons - Asking Time Conversation A What time do you have? It's ten o'clock sharp. Conversation B What's the time? It’s almost eight. Do you have the exact time? Yes, it's two minutes to eight. Conversation C Excuse me. What time is it? Its a quarter of two. I guess my watch is slow then. Well, I know mine isn't fast. Conversation D What time is it right now? It’s a five twenty five. I've got five thirty five. You're ten minutes fast then. Conversation E Do you have the correct time? Yes. It's two minutes to three. Are you sure your watch is right? It may be a few minutes slow. What is Time? Time is a measure of duration. What causes time? Time A time is a decimal number that represents a fraction of a day. Unlike a date whose starting point can depend on various factors, a time is usually stated to start on a non-spatial point called midnight. Like a date, a time is represented with a combination of numbers and special characters. A numerical representation of what point in a day it is. Time is displayed in hours, followed by minutes, and then seconds. There are 24 hours in one day, 1,440 minutes in a one day, and 86,400 seconds in one day. Hour The hour (common symbol: h or hr) is a unit of measurement of time. In modern usage, an hour comprises 60 minutes, or 3,600 seconds. It is approximately 1/24 of a mean solar day. An hour may be represented in a numerical value of 1 to 12 or 0001 to 2400. Several digital clocks and computers running Microsoft Windows utilize civilian time of hours of 1 to 12 and represent the time of day with AM or PM. Many Unix, Linux and other clocks may use military time, which has no AM or PM and is represented with a value of 1 to 24. Below is a listing of Military time values and their conversions. Minute and second A minute is represented in numerical values of 01 to 59. There are 60 minutes in every hour and 60 seconds in every minute. Date A date is a number that represents the number of days that have elapsed from a set period in history. What Causes Day and Night? Day and night is caused by the rotation of the Earth about its axis. At any given time, the half facing the Sun will be shined upon while the other half will have no light. Places in the former will therefore experience day while places in the latter will experience night. Of course, since the Earth is rotating, the illuminated places will not be illuminated forever. After some time, it will be their turn to experience night. Now, if only the Earth’s axis was perpendicular to its orbital plane, all places on Earth would experience equal times of days and nights, i.e., 12 hours of day and 12 hours of night. However, this is not so. The Earth’s axis is actually tilted. Hence, at certain times of the year, those in the northern hemisphere will be exposed to the Sun longer than those in the southern hemisphere. Then as the Earth approaches the opposite side of its orbit, the opposite happens and those in the southern hemisphere will now have more hours under the Sun. Subsequently, in extreme places like the North and South pole, the Sun may never set or never rise at certain times of the year. Now, how about the Moon and stars? Why do we only see them at night? Actually, that is not entirely true. There are some days when we do see the Moon in the sky. This happens when it is somewhere in between (not necessarily directly) the Earth and Sun. Anyway, going back to the Moon and stars question, we see the Moon and stars during the night because they’re the only ones shining in the sky. They’re still there during the day but their faint light simply cannot compete with the Sun’s bright light. Those times of the year when the northern and southern hemispheres experience their longest days and nights are called solstices. There’s the Summer Solstice and the Winter Solstice.
