Pressure Sensors, Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Silicon On Sapphire (SOS) pressure sensor work?

ELDEC SOS pressure sensors are based on a four-element piezoresistive bridge. As pressure is increased, the resistance changes to produce a differential voltage output from nominal 10 vdc excitation. See the Pressure Sensors, How They Work  section for a diagram and explanation detail.

What is meant by high performance?

ELDEC SOS pressure sensors provide high performance through the unique properties of silicon strain gages that are molecularly bonded to a sapphire diaphragm. This mono-crystalline combination structure provides inherent high repeatability and stability without hysteresis over a wide temperature range, from cryogenic to beyond 300 degrees C. ELDEC's advanced design capability applies this technology to maximize performance in your system.

How accurate is a Silicon On Sapphire (SOS) pressure sensor?

ELDEC SOS is capable of providing pressure sensor accuracy within 0.01% FS by capitalizing on highly repeatable and stable characteristics with negligible hysteresis and using digital compensation methods. This level of accuracy is typically only necessary in RVSM or other air data systems but gives a high level of assurance in any application.

Why select ELDEC Silicon On Sapphire (SOS) pressure sensors?

ELDEC provides core capability beyond the level of just a sensor provider, including unique packaging skills to match the pressure sensor to the installation, broad electronics capability for analog, frequency, or digital interfaces, and joint systems and program cooperation. Use the Ask the Expert button for further information on applying ELDEC SOS pressure sensing technology to your program.
