Srinagar, May 27: Srinagar city is facing drinking water shortage of 25 million gallons per day (MGD). While the total demand is 68 MGD, the available generation with the water treatment plants of the Public Health Engineering department is only 43.16 MGD. Interestingly, the installed capacity of the city treatment plants is 67.55 MGD, almost equal to the demand, but the low performance of the plants is creating the shortage.

There are five sources from which the department is supplying water to the city. These are: Nishat system, Doodganga system, Rangil System, Alusteng system and Pokribal system.

The Nishat system has five water treatment plants having installed capacity of 19 MGD. The Doodganga has four plants having installed capacity of 10 MGD, Rangil has two plants having capacity of 30 MGD, Alusteng two plants of 6.80 MGD and Pokhribal one plant having capacity of 4 MGD.

Sources said except Rangil-II all the treatment plants require revamping.

The government has given the revamping job to Economic Reconstruction Agency but the agency has so far not taken up work in any of the plants, sources said.

Sources said Rangil-I, Alusteng and Pokhribal plants have aged equipment, lowering the capability to 60 per cent of the installed capacity.

The department is also facing difficulty because of non-commissioning of the Rangil-II. The government has assigned the work of laying the pipelines to ERA.

If the ERA completes the work of laying the pipelines, the PHE department would be able to supply drinking water to various areas of the city facing acute shortage, like Bemina, said a senior PHE official. July, 2009, is the new deadline for the project.

Water for Srinagar city is tapped from Sind through Sind extension canal. The canal is the backbone of Srinagar water supply and source of 75 percent daily supplies.

Keeping eye on the future, the department has also taken up two projects- Sukhnag and Tangnar- to meet the demand. Officials said these plants would supply water to areas like Zainakot, Lawaypora, Khomaini Chowk, Humhama, Pandrathan, Khanmoh.
